Why Traditional Chin Straps Don't Work

Traditional chin straps generally come in two styles: linear and split. Despite the

variations, both rely on the same design — a single elastic band (often neoprene) that wraps tightly around the tip of the chin.

This setup directs the pulling force backward toward the ear, placing most of the pressure directly into the jaw joint, which sits just in front of the ear.

The goal of these straps is to restrict jaw movement by increasing friction in the joint. However, this approach is problematic.

The force required to hold the jaw closed can cause pain, and prolonged use may even damage the joint. More importantly, these straps fail to provide the upward, supportive lift that’s actually needed to rotate the jaw into a natural, stable position.

Premium Materials and Thoughtful Design

The Premium cap is made with a three-layer net-mesh, while the Plus version uses 100% Indian manta cotton. Both materials are highly breathable yet strong and durable.

The Dual Band chin strap is built from six different materials plus Velcro, carefully assembled from 24 individual pieces. This combination is essential to achieve the vertical lift and the compound elastic–non-elastic pressure system that makes the strap effective while still comfortable.

The elastic and non-elastic straps work together to create a compound force curve, minimizing pressure while maintaining support. To keep the cap both durable and lightweight, the Premium uses a three-layer mesh, while the full-cap design balances vertical forces at the front and adapts to different head shapes and sizes. For a secure fit, the cap is made of three panels with an adjustable rear strap.

Since part of the Velcro and cap covers the ears, a soft grey felt lining has been added for comfort. The entire perimeter of the cap is also lined, ensuring it stays comfortable for long-term daily use.

CPAP Results by Hope2sleep using the Dual Band chin strap

The Dual Band Chin Strap by Knightsbridge Sleep Solutions features a revolutionary two-strap system:

Non-elastic strap (blue): Prevents the jaw from lowering.

Elastic strap (black/white): Provides a gentle, supportive upward force.

Together, these straps create a compound force curve—as shown in the graph—where minimal pressure is needed to keep the jaw comfortably closed.

The elastic band offers gentle lift, while the non-elastic band engages only when the mouth begins to open, ensuring comfort at rest and effective support during sleep.

This unique design results in exceptionally low leakage and improved CPAP performance compared to using a mask alone.

Clinical Test Results:

Full Face Mask without Chin Strap → Acceptable AHI, but high leakage (up to 40% of the night).

Nasal Mask without Chin Strap → Low AHI, but still significant leakage (18% of the night).

Nasal Mask with Dual Band Chin Strap  Very low AHI with no leakage.

Full Face Mask with Dual Band Chin Strap  Low AHI with no leakage.
